Common Core Surprises in Mathematics

We are all aware that we learn in a variety of ways. Some learners focus on one specific method while others are more blessed with the ability to be successful using multiple. I am a visual learner. If someone is talking my ear off, I am literally straining to pay attention. I like to have a visual to look off of.

In recent decades, the most “successful” math student was someone who could memorize the rule and simply plug and chug their way through every level of mathematics. This type of process, however, is now producing the lowest scoring exams. Proper mathematical thinking includes being able to make real-world connections to the problems being solved. It’s important show value in creativity and deeper thinking.

Knowing all students approach one problem in a variety of different ways, math educators have a fantastic opportunity to model multiple methods of solving. Students who have exposure to unique ways of solving are more likely to see connections and apply them in their daily lives with concepts they remember.
